Sandwich Harbour Halfday Tour 

Walvis Bay Lagoon, Walvis Bay Salt refinery, Kuiseb delta,  Namib Naukluft National Park, sand driving next to the Atlantic, Sandwich Harbour, dune driving, wildlife, lunch with fresh oysters.

We take you deep into the Namib desert, the oldest desert on earth, to a mystical place named Sandwich Harbour. The ride to reach our destination is in itself an adventure because we will have to carefully navigate between the mighty Atlantic on the on side and 100 meter high dunes  on the other. You will be spoilt with a  light lunch, including oysters and sparkling wine or local beers. And after lunch we go and look for some wildlife to photograph. Then head homewards.

Itinerary

  1. 8:30am / 12:30-  We meet our clients at the pickup location, after a quick briefing we head out to our first stop of the day.
  2. Walvis Bay Lagoon is a RAMSAR site and one of the best places to see greater and lesser flamingo, avecets,pelicans and other birdlife.
  3. Next we head towards the Walvis Bay Salt refinery. We drive onto an adjacent dune to get a beautiful view of the saltworks and our guide will explain the refining process to you.
  4. We now drive into the Kuiseb River Delta, through the narrow path in the reeds, heading towards the natural salt pans in the area, also known as our desert highway. 
  5. Our next stop is at the border line that marks the start of the Namib Naukluft National Park, its the largest park in Africa and covers an area larger than Switzerland! From here we drive along the Atlantic to Sandwich Harbour. 
  6. Just before we get to the lagoon at Sandwich Harbour, we have to navigate a narrow path, with 100 meter high dunes on the left, and the roaring Atlantic to the right, this is something to behold! We now stop at Sandwich Harbour to explain its history, you are then able to climb up a dune for the spectacular view of the whole lagoon.
  7. Depending on the weather, we will prepare your lunch at the lagoon, however, if it is too windy then we will head further into the desert to a secluded vista and set up lunch.
  8. After some refreshments we do some dune driving and look for wildlife while slowly heading back to your drop off point, we often encounter ostrich, jackal, oryx and springbok.
  9. 13:00/ 17:30 its time to say our goodbyes as that concludes our tour of Sandwich Harbour.

Our tours although fun and adventurous, are safe, and we do not condone reckless driving. We support local conservation and thereby are limited to where we are allowed to drive in order to protect our precious desert fauna and flora.

  1. 1 month or longer prior to booked tour - 20% cancellation fee.
  2. 14 days prior to booked tour - 50% cancellation fee.
